Food, Commissary and other Goods

This category includes companies that provide food, commissary, and other services to U.S. prisons, jails, and immigration detention centers. The industry is dominated by private equity firms.

Our research focuses on the publicly traded companies that operate within this industry on a national scale. This includes companies that provide:

  • Food services, i.e., the food served at mealtimes in a carceral institution's cafeteria.
  • Commissary/canteen items: goods that are available for purchase at prison "stores." These items include, for example, supplemental food and snacks; soap, toothpaste, and other hygiene items; electronics; cigarettes; reading materials; and greeting cards.
  • Staff uniforms and/or clothing for incarcerated individuals.
