A British multinational contract food service company. Provides food services to prisons.

The Compass Group plc is a food and facilities management services company based in the United Kingdom. The corporation operates in 50 countries, serving more than 4 billion meals a year. With over 500,000 employees, it is one of the top 20 largest corporations in the world. Compass’ 2014 revenues were £17.557 billion (approximately $28.93 billion). 48% of those revenues were derived from operations in North America, 34% from Europe and Japan, and 12% from South America, Asia, and the Middle East.

In the U.S., the corrections divisions of the Compass Group were Trinity Services Group and Canteen Correctional Services. Both companies functioned as separate regional divisions of Compass Group USA providing food service to local, state, and federal jails and prisons.

In 2012 the two divisions merged under the name Trinity Services Group, and were sold to the hedge fund group H.I.G Capital. The company operates in 44 U.S. states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, serving more than 300,000 inmates. Its 2012 revenues (the last available figures) were $300 million.

Despite claims that the company has sold its U.S. corrections business, Compass Group still maintains “a meaningful ownership stake” in Trinity. Additionally, the company continues to operate in the correctional food service market outside of the U.S.

In Canada, the company serves regional detention facilities in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario and Saskatchewan, and describes its staff as “experts in the provision of prison food.” Compass also operates in Canadian universities and healthcare centers, where along with prisons it has been subject to harsh criticism and controversy surrounding food quality. In the U.K, Compass provides food service to prisons through the “Defence and Government” segment of its subsidiary ESS Support Services Worldwide.
